Lifting My Dark Cloud

I am going to be very honest here and describe my first couple of years of parenthood as “hell on earth”. Using those words makes me feel pretty sad, but they accurately sum up my memories of that time. ​With hindsight, I now know that I was suffering from undiagnosed post-natal depression, which could have easily been prevented with the right support.

After a Minor Surgery

We just came home from my son’s minor surgery under anaesthesia. I feel thankful that I am still nursing my little boy, who is two years and eight months old.

​When he was disorientated waking up from the anaesthesia, he was calmed down and comforted immediately as he latched on.

Now that I have weaned my younger daughter, Tara, I can look back on the many months I spent breastfeeding her and her big sister, Padma. What fond memories! In a way, it shocks me to realize that I spent a total of 50 months nursing my two daughters. During the whole time, I worked in a full time job and lived as usual. ​

My 2.5 year old son Pierce and I night-weaned last fall.  We bed-share, and he had nursed without restriction since birth. Almost 900 days into motherhood, we were still waking at least six to eight times every night, to nurse for up to 20 minutes at a time.
